If you want consistent, target-hitting serves, focus on a repeatable routine, clear targets, and simple, high-rep drills. I’m Russ Lombardo, and the pickleball serve accuracy drills Cary players succeed with are the ones you can repeat on any court, in any weather, and under match pressure. In this post, I share the exact progressions I use with my students to build serve accuracy fast.
A reliable serve does not have to be flashy. You earn quick points by placing the ball deep, picking smart targets, and removing unforced errors. The players who win service games most often are not the ones with the biggest swings. They are the ones who land 8 or 9 out of 10 serves to purposeful spots, then start the point on their terms.
As a PCI-certified coach with five years of coaching experience, I have seen how a few focused habits can transform your first shot. Students tell me what helps most is making the “why” behind each drill clear. When you understand the purpose, practice is motivating, and results stick.
A repeatable serve is a motion you can produce the same way on a breezy day, or indoors, or at any location. Here is the checklist I coach:
When this feels automatic, accuracy becomes about eyes and intent rather than effort.
To make accuracy visible, tape or use cones to mark a large rectangle in the opponent’s service box, then divide it into four big targets: deep-left, deep-right, short-left, short-right. Deep targets win you more weak returns because our opponents often struggle to attack from their heels.
Scoring goal: 80 percent in, 60 percent to your intended quadrant. Once you hit those numbers, you will feel the difference in real games.
Place 10 flat cones across the service box baseline, each about a paddle width apart. Work left to right, serving at cone 1, then cone 2, and so on to cone 10. If you miss, repeat that cone until you hit it clean.
Use painter’s tape to make 3 square bullseyes along the service line and 2 along the baseline. Serve in a 3-2-1 pattern:
Repeat the sequence 5 times. Track streaks, not just makes. Most misses are from over-aiming the corners. Your goal is a calm swing and predictable depth, not hero shots.
On breezy days, set three cones forming a triangle near the deep-middle, deep-right, and deep-left. Serve clockwise around the triangle for 30 balls, then counterclockwise for 30.
This teaches you to start safe and shift your aim line based on wind, a common match-day reality.
Bring a mini scoreboard or use your phone notes. Play 4 sets of 10 serves to a single quadrant. Your goal is 8 in and 6 in the intended target per set.
Accuracy must hold up when an opponent is staring you down. Grab a partner. Serve 1 ball to the deep backhand corner, your partner returns deep to your backhand, and you play the point to 7. Then switch corners. Keep serve locations honest by calling them out before you hit.
This is where smart targets meet game flow. It also tests whether your favorite spot is truly repeatable when it counts.
A routine anchors your motion on every surface and in any weather. Try using a 5-count:
Practice your routine between rallies in rec play. Consistency is a skill, not an accident.
For most adult players, 80-120 quality serves, 2-3 times per week, is the sweet spot. That is roughly 15-25 minutes per session if you move with purpose and minimize ball chasing. On weeks when work or weather gets in the way, do one longer session indoors and one shorter outdoor session to keep your wind adjustments fresh.
If you like data, track three numbers: in-bounds percentage, target percentage, and average depth, measured by how often you land within 3 feet of the baseline. You will know you are improving because your bad days become solid, not because your good days become magical.

If serve accuracy is your main goal, we can devote the first two sessions to mechanics and targeting, then layer in return patterns and third-shot planning.
