Starting tennis can feel exciting, but it can also be a little intimidating. You may wonder whether you need experience, what equipment to bring, or whether you are athletic enough to begin.
The good news is that you do not need to know anything about tennis before your first lesson. My job as a coach is to meet you at your current level and help you improve from there.
Your Lesson Will Be Based on Your Experience Every player begins with different goals and abilities. Some players have never held a tennis racket, while others may already play recreationally, on a school team, or in competitive tournaments.
At the beginning of the lesson, I will ask about your experience and what you would like to accomplish. Your goals might include:
Your lesson will be adjusted to fit your age, experience, learning style, and goals.
We Will Begin With the Fundamentals Beginner players usually start by learning the proper grip, ready position, contact point, and follow-through. These fundamentals create a strong foundation for every tennis stroke.
Instead of immediately hitting difficult shots from the baseline, we may begin closer to the net. Starting at a shorter distance helps players develop control and understand how the ball reacts to the racket.
As you become more comfortable, we can gradually move farther back and work on:
The goal is not to master everything during one lesson. The goal is to understand the basics and begin developing confidence.
Mistakes Are Part of Learning Many new players become frustrated when the ball goes into the net or outside the court. That is completely normal.
Tennis requires timing, coordination, movement, and repetition. Even experienced players make mistakes during practices and matches. Players improve by learning what happened, making a small adjustment, and trying again.
During lessons, I focus on giving clear and useful feedback without overwhelming the player. We may concentrate on one or two corrections at a time so that improvement feels manageable.
Effort, attitude, and coachability are often more important than performing every skill perfectly.
What Should You Bring? For your first lesson, you should bring:
You do not need expensive equipment to begin. The most important thing is arriving ready to learn and participate.
Tennis Lessons Are Not Only for Competitive Players You do not have to be preparing for a tournament or school team to benefit from tennis lessons.
Tennis can help improve coordination, cardiovascular fitness, discipline, confidence, and problem-solving. It is also a sport that children and adults can continue playing throughout their lives.
Some players want competitive development, while others simply want to exercise, learn a new skill, and have fun. Both are great reasons to take lessons.
My Coaching Approach I have experience working with beginners, junior players, high school athletes, adults, and competitive players. My coaching combines technical instruction with movement, consistency, confidence, and match strategy.
Lessons are tailored to each player rather than using the exact same approach for everyone. Whether you are picking up a racket for the first time or preparing for competitive play, we will build a training plan around your goals.
Most importantly, I want players to enjoy the process of improving. Progress takes patience, repetition, and consistent effort, but every player is capable of developing their game.
Ready to Get Started? Your first tennis lesson is the beginning of the learning process—not a test of how good you already are.
Come ready to move, learn, make mistakes, and have fun. Together, we will build the skills and confidence needed to help you reach your tennis goals.
